This female patient was referred for evaluation and fabrication of a new set of dentures. Patient had her dentures for several years without any adjustments ever been done. The looseness of the denture and constant irritation of the tissue had caused excessive tissue growth, which has made the denture more unstable.

The treatment plan was “Surgical excision of the hyperplastic tissue” and simultaneous “Vestibuloplasty” which means increasing the depth of the vestibule space to provide more stability for the denture.

The post-surgical photo was taken three weeks after the surgery, which shows significant improvement.

  • excessive gingival tissue growth. Epulis.
  • Vestibuloplasty.

More Information

If you are suffering from ill-fitting dentures you owe it to yourself to consult with a prosthodontist.

About the Pre-prosthetic surgeries.

“Preprosthetic surgeries” are different surgical procedures with the aim to facilitate fabrication of dentures. These procedures may be minor bony re-contouring to more extensive grafting procedures.

All surgical correction of the edentulous mouth prior to the reception of complete dentures must be done under the direction of the prosthodontist. He is the architect and must indicate what he would like to have done. The oral surgeon is the engineer and must formulate the methods and carry out procedures to produce the end results indicated by the architect.

One of the reasons I extended my education to learn periodontal surgeries, was to be in full control to achieve what I plan. However, even though I do many surgical procedures myself, I still refer out some cases that would require more advanced expertise of oral surgeons.
